The Moratalla Palace is located in the town of Hornachuelos, it has a Palace with several rooms that astonish those who visit them. Surrounding the palace is an imposing garden in the style of Versailles, which highlights the majesty of the whole.

History of the Palace

Now we know that the palace has its origins in Roman times, since archaeological remains have been discovered that bear witness to it. But the oldest documented facts that are known lead us to the twelfth century, where it is known that there was a castle in the place named Murad, from which the name of Moratalla comes.

There are a large number of fountains throughout the garden, including the Fountain of the Deer, with a sculpture by Mariano Benlliure that is located behind the palace. Other well-known sources are the Thieves and the Doña Leonor.

The Garden was built by order of Alfonso XIII in 1918, was made for the Marquises of Viana and was designed by Forrestier. One of the characteristics of this place is the large amount of vegetation, with large trees. The main reason for this exuberance is due to the fact that the zone bears very hot seasons in the summer months, this wooded area was made with the purpose of lowering the temperature of the Palace itself.

The grandiosity of the Palace can not be conceived without the association of the garden, which was declared in 1983 Artistic Garden by Royal Decree.
